John James Audubon (1785-1851),
American ornithologist, naturalist and painter.
He was born Jean Rabin in the French colony of Saint-Dominique, now Haiti, the illegitimate son of Lieutenant Jean Audubon and his mistress Jeanne Rabine; who died when he was a few months old. The elder Audubon and his French wife later adopted him, named him Jean-Jacques and raised him in France where he was encouraged in his interest in nature.. From this early age he acquired a fascination for birds, studying their behaviour, movement, nests and plummage.
At 18 his father acquired a false passport and dispatched the young Audubon to the United States to avoid him being drafted into Napoleon's army. There he changed his name to the more American form of John James.
Audubon is famous for his paintings and illustrations of American birds set in their natural habitats. His greatest work, Birds of America was first published in 1827-1839 and brought him world-wide acclaim.
The cost of printing the entire work was paid for by advance subscriptions. The edition was engraved in aquatint by Robert Havell and hand coloured. Known as the "double elephant" folio edition, It consisted of 435 sheets of life-size prints of more than 700 birds, measuring 26" x 39".
It was an enormous achievement which took 14 years of field studies and drawings. It is regarded as the greatest pictorial work ever produced on ornithology.
