Papillons - E A Seguy

Papillons - E A Seguy

Eugene Alain Seguy (1889-1985) was a French designer who drew his inspiration from nature and produced bold and brilliantly coloured plants and insects from around the world.

His goal was to create interest in the natural designs of nature “a repertoire of forms and of colours of a sumptuous richness and a surprising variety” by creating accurate illustrations of colourful, exotic plant and insect species unknown to most Europeans.  His style reflected the influence of art deco and art nouveau.

Seguy published folios using the Pochoir technique (French word for “stencil”, a form of colouring that date back to a thousand years ago in China).  He used this highly refined technique for making fine limited editions of prints.

11 albums of illustrations were produced from the turn of the 19th century to the 1930s.  His later works showed an interest in cubist and geometric styles.

Our series Papillons and Insectes reflect exquisite examples of the Seguy style in ornamentation and composition.
